The Best of Fashion for 2011

After trailing a blaze through designer catwalk collections worldwide, the mini dress looks set for iconic style status this season. These four stunning manifestations will definitely inspire, providing plenty of insight to help you navigate the high street. One fashion must have for 2011 is the mini dress, so step lively and invest in one for day and another for evening and show some leg.

Holly Fulton London

This distinctive sunshine yellow cocktail dress (spot the laser cut glass motif) combines minimalist chic with witty edge. It’s quirky poise and adorable 50’s inspired full skirt makes a modern statement, with strong yet fluid lines it’s wonderfully quirky and totally original; I can see Emma Watson in this one. Style notes to be taken here are colour vitality, a distinctive silhouette and a precision cut. Created by the British designer Holly Fulton in only her fourth runway season, this dress is a comparatively pared down version of her signature art deco style prints and perhaps signals a maturing of her already sophisticated aim to push the boundaries of fashion.

Dolce & Gabbana Milan

An ultra pretty baby doll dress, by the indomitable duo, with its delectable white macramé charm and the graceful addition of the sleeveless coat provides a nonchalant mood of self assurance. Although shockingly short it’s rendered respectable and is a style note worth remembering, a kind of sartorial cake and eat it solution to shall I or shan’t I in the changing rooms. Another aspect to consider is that with the some bohemian accessories it could easily tap into the Gypsy trend. Cool, white cotton on skin is sensual and invigorating to wear in the summer heat and macramé is a welcome lace trend update.

3.1 Phillip Lim New York

Self styled fashion culture heavyweights Kayne West and Alexa Chung were front row at Philip Lim, a definite indicator that Lim is delivering what counts.

For effortless daytime glamour New York style, this shift dress in a soothing blue hue is as fresh as a morning sky. It’s another example of subtle design detailing to ensure ease of wear, check the lower hemline at the back making it practical for work or weekend. The daybreak palate of textural hues; dove grey clouds, a pale milky blue sky and pink as the sun rises produce a harmonious colour trinity focusing the eye, so that fewer elements create a greater impact.

Synonymous with opulent evening glamour; Gucci ended its runway show with four glossy silk mini dresses with an artisan feel. This one in bronzed orange caught my eye, it’s a decadent way to pay homage to colour when the sun goes down. Yet, this dress has an earthy sophistication with its painstaking art of construction, making it instantly covetable and intensely desirable. This luxe after dark dress, with tribal style feather embellishment, has been thoughtfully crafted; note the unexpected pockets for laid back allure. When out and about shopping think ‘relaxed decadence’ and select an evening dress that allows you to make all the right moves.
