About Me by Ruth Fuller
Growing up in the Peak District didn’t exactly give me many exciting activities to do, especially as a teenager. In my village, there is literally a post office, pharmacy, newsagents and randomly a carpet shop! There are also five pubs, but these didn’t get put to any use until we were a bit older. Thankfully there are trains to Manchester and Sheffield, so at weekends we could go to the ‘big city’ for girly shopping trips. The first time we were allowed to go with no adults we felt so grown up!
My Prom Dress
While I was here, I attended a specialist technology high school and this is where my love for fashion really began. I had always loved looking at beautiful dresses in magazines, but here we got to study textiles. In the early years we made cushions and puppets but when I chose it for my GCSE’s we were allowed to make anything we wanted. I set my targets high and designed and made my own prom dress, with matching bag, which I did actually wear to my prom!
Australia
Having a small choice of colleges in the area; nowhere did any kind of fashion or textiles course, so I couldn’t continue textiles in an academic way. I completed my Alevels in other subjects and after college decided to pack up and head to sunny Australia for a year! It was the best year of my life travelling from coast to coast, meeting and seeing knew people and places, but it had to come to an end.
I am now going into my final year at Edge Hill University studying English Language. I have always enjoyed writing and love this opportunity to write about fashion!
Pull and Bear
High street favourites include H & M, Zara, Pull and Bear and Urban Outfitters. I discovered Pull and Bear three years ago when I was in Spain and was made up when one appeared in Liverpool last year! Ebay is also amazing for bargains. I love patterns and splashes of colour and would always choose dolly shoes over stilettos.
I love the current trends; playsuits, jumpsuits, patterned shorts, blouses, palazzo trousers etc. It’s all very fun and can be mixed and matched. Last summer I was volunteer teaching in rural Thailand and everything in our shops now, especially the jump/play suits, were being sold on the Thai market places. After a bit of haggling you could get items for about 50p, I just wish I had bought more at the time! I’m not too sure that rural Thailand follows fashion trends but the clothes out there were gorgeous and really feminine.
Valentino
This is what I love in designers. When I look at red carpet dresses the really feminine, floaty, soft, gorgeous dresses stand out to me. Valentino and Oscar De La Renta are two of my favourites. A beautiful dress can make you feel amazing!
