Battle of the Best Fashion Era
We want to find out which decade you think is the best fashion era since the end of World War II. To help you decide here is a quick stop guide to the last 60 years in the world of fashion. Please vote using the poll below.
50’s
This was the first time that consumers felt the notion to be fashionable after the war. Yet clothes remained practical; there was a big boom in births, which in turn gave birth to the swing coat. Fur also dominated many high street shops. In the late 40’s Dior created their New Look which carried right through the 50’s with full skirted dresses, nipped in waists and bright colours. The 50s were about looking glamorous and this is portrayed entirely the iconic Chanel suit.
60s
The beehive hairdo wasn’t the only thing going up in the 60’s. Fashion became slightly more daring; with hemlines rising, creating the mini-skirt and classic shift dress, women were ready to bare more leg. Twiggy is possibly the most associated model with this century. Colours remained bright and usually block. The 60’s is when fashion started to become slightly more riskey.
70s
The 70s were all about free love and of course the fashion reflected the hippy movement. Wedges, palazzo trousers, crop tops, HUGE flares, flower garlands, bright patterns and platforms were all he rage (and this was not just for the ladies). Mini skirts survived from the 60s and fashion through the 70s was extremely versatile and fun. In the late 70s the punk movement began also bringing with it the Mohawk, studs and leather jackets. However the main association with the 70s is the hippy movement. Peace Man.
80s
The punk movement continued into the 80s, however again this is not the main way 80s fashion is remembered. Influences from Madonna and films like Flashdance bought leggings, leotards, and fishnets. Not to mention the MASSIVE shoulder pads everyone seemed to love. Colours got even brighter, going into neon shades and everyone owned a pair of leg warmers! Hair was kept looking big and un-kept. Creating an 80s outfit; if your hair and shoulders are big then you’re bang on trend!
90s
Anyone born in the 90s like myself can surely say we have had the straight cut fringe and know all the words to any Spice Girls song and the theme to Fresh Prince of Belair. 90s fashion was overall pretty casual. Jeans and a t-shirt were average daywear, as well as tartan skirts, leggings, over-size tops/jumpers, denim jackets and at some point everyone in the 90s owned a head scarf. (mine was purple with sparkly bits!) Converse became popular and flared jeans came into fashion. In the 90s almost anything went, its hard to put a theme to this century other than casual, fun and colourful.
00s
Since the millennium fashion seems to be going round and round in circles faster than ever before. Every season the newest trends originate from a previous century. A few original things to be major trends are the ugg boots, big handbags, skinny jeans/jeggings, the playsuit, and ballerina pumps. Celebrity culture is bigger than ever before and this has a huge impact on fashion. This century incorporates fashion from every century mentioned above and it will possibly be in a few years time, when we can properly look back over these 10years, that we will see a strong fashion trend.
