Fashion Designers A – Z

Alexander McQueen – British designer, his collections were pieces of art and his catwalk shows know for their theatrical performances.  Check out his famous robot spray paint show – McQueen Catwalk Show

Baby Phat – Hip-hop style label, urban street fashion.  The name behind the brand is Kimora Lee Simmons.

Coco Channel – French designer, one of fashion histories most prominent figures.  Know for revolutionising the style of women’s clothing, introducing masculine shapes and plain styles well ahead of her time.

Deacon (Giles) – British designer from Yorkshire, know for his “pop culture” styles using bold colours and patterns.  One of his previous collections was based on 1980s game Pac Man. See Deacon Pac Man.

Etro – Italian family owned company.  Know for their kaleidoscopic bold patterns, bright colours combined with classic tailoring.

Fendi – Another Italian design company, started in 1918 as a small leather and fur company.  Know for their classic draped shapes and stylish colours.

Gareth Pugh – St Martins graduate his end of year show attracted much attention, including the editor of Dazed and Confused who soon put him on the front page.  His style is all most contemporary sculpture.

Henry Holland - Label House of Holland, best know for his first collection of 1980s style slogan t-shirts.  He is closely associated with model Agyness deyn and is a name to watch out.

Issey Miyake – Japanese designer famed for his technical and sculptural approach to fashion.  His Pleat Please Collection was innovate and changed the traditional approach to garment construction.

Jacobs (Marc) – American designer worked for the likes of Louis Vuitton, classic draped styles combined with modern textures and patterns.

Klein (Calvin) – The king of cool, casual jeans, simple dress styles.  With names like Kate Moss modelling for him was at the high of his career in the minimalist early 1990s.

Louis Vuitton – Recognised now for his must have designer bags and probably just as popular fakes.  Started by Louis in late 1880s as a leather bags company, now includes other ranges such as clothing.

Matthew Williamson – From my home city of Manchester, he attended St Martins where his career became established. Know for his luxurious draped dresses in bright colours and patterns.

Nicole Farhi – French designer, started her career in 1970s moving to London to work for brand French Connection before starting her own label.  Classic tailoring and use of layering defines her style.

Oscar de la renta – Classic designer, famous for his high-end feminine red carpet style dresses.  He has worked for the likes of Elizabeth Arden, Christian Dior.

Paul Smith – He famously said “You can find Inspiration in Everything” and this is what he did.  Starting out in the high-street men’s clothing trade, he has introduced fun and pattern to everyday men’s clothing.

Queen – Vienne Westwood fashion royalty, started the punk look in the seventies designing the classic punk bondage trousers.  Her collections since are influenced greatly by historical fashion and patterns.

Raf Simons – Menswear designer combine classic tailoring and cuts with baggy urban style for classic meets modern twist.

Stella McCartney – Her simple casual styles include street-wear and classic tailoring.  Leading to her cross over in fashion circles, working for very different brands such as Chloe and Addidas.

Tom Ford – Celebrity designer, relatively young and has the good looking as any of his models.  His style is luxurious, high-end fashion and he has worked for the likes of Gucci.

Underground – Many fashion trends are born on the streets and in underground club such as the legendary Boombox.  Where the cool and trendy went to flaunt their latest creations or vintage market find.

Victor and Rolf – Famous for their artistic fairy-tale like creations, this duo started out creating unique Haute Couture collections.  However their brand has expanded and they have even designed for H & M.

Wayne Hemmingway – Started Red or Dead in Manchester Afflecks Palace the early nighties, brought retro style fashion into the mass market with quirky shoes, glasses and clothing ranges.

X - I have no clue of any fashion designers beginning with X, please comment if you do.

Young British Designers – New designers are emerging every year from Britain’s top fashion establishments, including Goldsmiths, Central St Martins and London College of Fashion.

Zandra Rhodes – First thought bright pink hair, wacky dress sense.  Zandra Rhodes is a textiles designer that has applied her work to fashion, bold prints and bright colours wonderful.
