1960s Fashion Era – By Guest Blogger Robyn Mellows
Fashion trends never expire, they may disappear one season and remerge refreshed and revived. Fashion incorporates the use of past decades of trends to create new looks that revisit iconic moments within the history of fashion.
1960’s was a decade of freedom for women both in equality and fashion. This decade saw women have freedom in what they worn and how they expressed themselves.
The swinging sixties were defined by the mods and rockers, the mods setting the scene with their iconic beatnik look and the rockers with their hardcore leather embellishment.
Twiggy became an iconic woman and representative of this time, creating a new look and ideal for women. Pop art was a major influence on fashion creating geometric prints with the use of new fabrics and materials such as PVC and the paper dress. Mary Quant became an admired designer creating the mini skirt which became an overnight phenomenon and still today remains an historical moment.
Music at this time was a major influence in fashion and the Beatles began their career creating and defining the sixties. London saw new designers such as BIBA which became the hub of fashion creating affordable but on trend clothes for women. The store was more than just a place to shop but became a monument in the way women expressed themselves and their new found style.
While across the pond, Jacqueline Kennedy became an influential role model and style icon. She influenced the style of the Chanel suit and later became a style fashionista in her own right.
Mainstream designers such as Pierre Cardin emerged creating a new ideal which later influenced the Mods defining style. Today Pierre Cardin is still a popular brand and the emergence of the sixties has appeared in many catwalk shows such as MIU MIU Autumn/Winter collection for 2010/2011.
